The truth about cellulite and tips to reduce its appearance

Do you know that 80% of women have cellulite? Many of us are ready to try anything to get rid of it, so we tend to forget that it’s a common and completely normal occurrence. Why not look to Ashley Graham and Lena Dunham as examples of how to embrace our skin instead of hating it? I know that’s easier said than done.

The truth about cellulite and tips to reduce its appearance

I’m part of the 80% of women who have cellulite, and I’ve gone to war against it, sometimes with unrestrained fervour. Whenever a new cream, glove or magical potion came out on the market promising miraculous results, I was the first in line to buy it. In the end, what I gained was smoother skin, but my cellulite didn’t budge. Sheesh!

Want to know the truth? Miracle cures do not exist. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news! Even though it’s nearly impossible to make cellulite disappear, you can reduce its appearance through healthy lifestyle habits, massage techniques and innovative products.

First off, what exactly is cellulite?

Cellulite is a dimpling of the skin caused by subcutaneous fat. Think of your skin as a mattress. The springs inside it cause dimples on the surface (like on your skin).

Cellulite could be described as toxins, a combination of fatty tissue, fluids and residues spread unevenly under your skin that exerts pressure on the adjacent connective tissues.

Cellulite is not necessarily a sign of being overweight. Some curvy women don’t have cellulite at all, while some slimmer ones do. I’ve even seen models with cellulite! However, losing weight may reduce the appearance of cellulite because it becomes less apparent if there is less fat under the skin.

"More than 80% of women over the age of 20 will get cellulite in their lifetime."

More than 80% of women over the age of 20 will get cellulite in their lifetime. And even though some men can get cellulite, more than 95% of cases affect women. It often appears at puberty and shows up on thighs and buttocks.

What are the causes of cellulite?

Many factors can contribute to cellulite. Genes and hormonal changes in women are the main causes. A woman’s skin is thinner than a man’s because the structure of the connective tissues differs. In addition, women tend to have more body fat than men. Poor blood circulation, a sluggish lymphatic circulation, water retention and an accumulation of toxic residues are other causes.

Can you fight cellulite?

If you want to reduce the appearance of cellulite, you might benefit from adopting the following healthy lifestyle habits.

Nutrition

Many women believe that they need to diet, but miracle and draconian diets don’t work and can even be bad for your health. Instead of starving yourself, change your diet by eating more fresh fruit, green vegetables, nuts, grains, whole grains, legumes, lean protein and healthy fats such as olive oil.

Nutrition

Don’t forget to drink a lot of water to eliminate excess fluids and residues. If you’re dehydrated, your body retains water which will make your adipose cells swell up and, in turn, possibly lead to cellulite. You might also want to think about cutting salt and refined sugar out of your diet, as these two ingredients cause adipose cells to retain water.

"To reduce the appearance of cellulite, you can get visible results thanks to anti-cellulite massages that boost microcirculation, reduce water retention and increase your lymphatic circulation."

Massaging your skin with decongestant products

You don’t need to rely on expensive massage treatments. You can get visible results at home thanks to anti-cellulite massages that boost microcirculation, reduce water retention and increase your lymphatic circulation. Here’s how.

In the shower

Stimulation technique : apply some smoothing anti-cellulite gel on a glove or massage tool. Target problem areas such as buttocks and thighs and massage upwards and downwards using circular motions.

Drainage technique : massage the thigh (or buttock) starting at the back and making your way to your front using large circular motions while exerting a slight pressure.

After your shower, on dry skin

Massage technique: place your hands around your thigh right above the knee. Apply pressure and slide your hands upwards until they reach the top of your thigh and buttock. Repeat three or four times.

Kneading technique: knead the skin where you have cellulite by pushing and pulling delicately with your hands.
