Vaccination is the best means of protection against shingles and its complications.
- People who are at higher risk of developing shingles and who are eligible for vaccination are:
- People aged 50 and older
- Adults with weakened immune systems due to illness or treatment
Adults with certain chronic conditions (rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, inflammatory bowel disease, chronic lung disease, chronic kidney disease, and insulin-treated diabetes)
In Quebec, people aged 71 and older and immunocompromised individuals aged 18 and older can get vaccinated against shingles for free. Different criteria apply in other provinces. Private insurance plans generally cover the vaccine if you are not eligible for free vaccination.
Certain conditions may apply. Please note that free vaccines are available in limited quantities. If your pharmacy no longer has any free doses available, you will be informed.

Shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus. Anyone who has had chickenpox becomes immune to it, but the virus remains dormant in the body and can be reactivated later as shingles. Shingles usually causes a rash along with a burning sensation and significant pain, which can sometimes persist for several weeks to several months after the acute episode.
