In Quebec, people aged 71 and older and immunocompromised individuals aged 18 and older can get vaccinated against shingles for free. Different criteria apply in other provinces. Private insurance plans generally cover the vaccine if you are not eligible for free vaccination.

Shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus. Anyone who has had chickenpox becomes immune to it, but the virus remains dormant in the body and can be reactivated later as shingles.
