The Basics on COVID 19

What is COVID-19?

COVID-19 is an infection caused by a virus that affects the respiratory tract (nose, throat and lungs).

COVID-19

What are the symptoms?

Typical symptoms include

  • coughing
  • fever (38°C or higher)
  • breathing difficulties

Symptoms may be mild (similar to a cold) or more severe (such as those associated with pneumonia, lung or kidney failure).

Special attention should be paid to the elderly, especially those aged 70 and older, as they are at greater risk of complications.

Since the symptoms are very similar to those seen in other common respiratory infections, such as influenza, bronchitis and pneumonia, it is recommended that anyone exhibiting symptoms of a respiratory infection voluntarily self-isolate for 10 days. Isolation will protect the people around you and prevent spreading the infection.

When should I see a doctor?

Self-isolating at home is recommended if you have a fever, cough or breathing difficulties. You can call your pharmacist to ask for a consultation to help alleviate your symptoms and find out if a medical visit is necessary.

Go to the emergency room only if you have severe breathing difficulties and if your condition allows it. However, you should first contact the health information line in your province, which will help assess your situation and tell you whether an emergency room visit is necessary. They will tell you how to get there and what precautions to take (wearing a mask, using personal transportation or an ambulance, etc.).

How is COVID-19 transmitted?

COVID-19 usually infects the nose, throat and lungs. It is most commonly spread by

  • close contact with an infected person when they cough or sneeze
  • hand contact with infected surfaces and then with the mouth, nose or eyes

How can I avoid spreading the virus?

Vaccination

  • Vaccination is the best way to reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus. It protects the person who receives it as well as the people around them, who may be more vulnerable to severe forms and complications of the disease.
  • Many Brunet pharmacies offer vaccination against COVID-19. Check with your local pharmacy or Book an appointment | Brunet

Hand hygiene

  • Wash your hands often with warm, soapy water for at least 20 seconds, especially after using the toilet, handling food or coming into contact with someone exhibiting symptoms of respiratory infection.
  • Use an alcohol-based disinfectant if soap and water are not available.
  • Avoid touching your nose, mouth, and eyes without first washing your hands.
  • Regularly clean frequently touched surfaces and objects with household disinfectants.

Respiratory etiquette

  • Cover your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or with a tissue when you cough or sneeze to avoid spreading germs.
  • If you use a tissue, dispose of it immediately and then wash your hands.

Should I wear a mask?

Public health authorities do not recommend the automatic use of masks in the general population. Their use is indicated for patients who have an infection (probable or confirmed), as well as for the healthcare professionals who care for them. However, a good way to protect yourself and reduce the spread of the virus is to wear a mask in public places, on public transport, and whenever you exhibit symptoms of respiratory infection.

How can I get my medically necessary products without going to the pharmacy?

We would like to remind you that your Brunet-affiliated pharmacist owners offer a range of remote services. You can ask for your prescription refills remotely, either by phone, or on our website at www.Brunet.ca. What’s more, most Brunet-affiliated pharmacies offer a delivery service if you don’t want to make the trip.
